Let’s Talk PYO’s!

I love to design these Stencils, kids of all ages love this cookie decorating activity, now let’s talk details on how to make the perfect Paint Your Own Cookies!

First things first, what is your Cookie project?

Are you celebrating a birthday, holiday or special event?

Or do you just want to make some for fun?

With almost 200 PYO Cookie Stencil designs to choose from, we definitely have your covered!  

Next for the age-old question:

Royal Icing Dots? or PYO Palettes?

It’s important to make this decision before you begin baking because you’ll need to figure out which Cookie Cutter works best for your project!

Let’s dive into the details…

Option 1: Royal Icing Dots

If you want to make Royal Icing Dots, we have a selection of Paint Your Own Cookie Cutters that include spacing for the paint colors.

Rule of thumb of when picking your cookie cutter, think enough space for at least FOUR paint colors.

Another option for Royal Icing Dots is to make a palette on a separate cookie. Our Cookie Stick Cookie Cutter works great for this!

Option 2: PYO Paint Palettes

Our pre-made PYO Paint Palettes offer 6 colors per palette and come as a Set of 12. They have a several year shelf life.

Let’s hash out the pros and cons of both options: 

Pros for RI Dots:

You can make these dots any color you want and there’s nothing additional to package.

Cons for RI Dots:

They can be time-consuming to make and the amount of color that the ‘painter’ can yield per dot is limited.

Pros for Paint Palettes:

There's nothing additional to make, you get 6 colors, and each color yields a lot for the ‘painter’. Plus, you can keep palettes on hand for upcoming projects as they have a long shelf-life.

Cons for Paint Palettes:

Maybe not so much of a Con, but something to note for individual cookie packaging. You’ll need to bag these palettes separately, before including them with the Cookie, so that they don’t get scratched or nicked up.

Ok, now that you’ve decided on your Cookie Cutter and Paint Method, it’s time to start decorating!

Flood your Cookie in white. Once that’s good and dry, it’s time to stencil your cookie!

Use Black Royal Icing, or even White if you’re going for a more subdued look, and scrape icing over your stencil and onto your cookie. 

To make life easier, and your decorating more accurate, we recommend using a stencil holder for this process. We love the Stencil Genie!

Once again, let the cookies dry.

Now’s a great time to clean up your workspace or maybe reward your hard work with a nice cup of coffee. 😉

Time for Cookie Packaging:

(If making PYO Cookies for your kiddos at home, you can skip this part and get right to baking!)

For those of you Cookiers who have orders to fill… Read on!

If you’ve decided to go the PYO Palette route, we recommend including both the palette and mini paint brush in a bag together. Then place these items behind your cookie in a larger bag.

Last step, tie off your cookie package in a pretty ribbon or string of your choice, and voilà, you’re done!

One more thing to mention:

A little bit of water goes a long way!

To activate the paint, when using either Royal Icing Dots or PYO Paint Palettes, you need only dip the brush in a little bit of water. You don’t want to 'flood' the cookies that you worked so hard to flood. 😉
